Finally our dream of visiting the land of Moose and Glaciers came true. On June 29th we arrived at Anchorage Airport and proceeded with 8 days exploration of the largest state of the USA.
It is hard to describe that vast, beautiful and very diverse piece of North America. We only could visit part of it. Like you can see on the map the majority of the area is accessible only via bush plains and ferries. We made 1500 miles. We started in Eagle River north of Anchorage where we met Erik extended family. Than we head south along the Turning Around Arm, to Soldotna where we stayed in Nill's cabin for a day. Then we went to Homer - the Halibut Capital City of Alaska. After eating a halibut taco we head north again - on the same Sterling Highway and visited Seward. From there we took a day cruise (with all you can eat Salmon and Ribs) on Resurrection Bay. It was a worthwhile experience. We saw orkas, sea lions, even a black bear on one of the mountain side. After Seward we made a loop through Paxton toward Fairbanks, then we took Denali Highway (gravel road) and arrived in Denali National Park. We wanted to see Mt. Kinley - the highest point in the North America , but the rain and heavy clouds didn't let us. We took a peak at it though from "the above" on the way home. Anyhow Alaska is a beautiful piece of land. In some places it reminds me European mountains, those green hills and grassy meadows look like mountains in Scotland. It is remote and crowds-free (unless you are on the cruise ship). Abundant of the wild life and wonderful views make the trip very unusual. We will definitely come back. We left plenty to visit and experience next time.
Here are 285 that we took. http://picasaweb.google.com/PatiJav/June_Alaska
